WHAT DOES DREAMING BIG MEANS?

A good friend and I recently catch up on various aspects of our lives. I got to know about a significant change in her life since we last chatted. I told her about achieving something that has been my dream as a young girl. As we chatted, I remembered and told her of various times I had shared the dream with friends, acquaintances and my family. I added, it was not surprising to my immediate younger sister as she remembered vividly but it just reminded her and myself of how great God is.

The conclusion from my friend was “Wow! Dreams do come through, that’s why it’s always good to dream big and not limit God. It may take time, but it will happen”.

So what does it mean to dream big?

Dreaming big for me is “simply having goals and targets beyond your reach” it makes you strive harder to achieve your set goal(s). For example, if a hawker leaves home in the morning to sell Water Melon. If the hawker set a goal of making 200 dollars in the first 4 hours of setting out. You will agree with me that the effort he/she would put into making sure the water melon are sold would be much greater than the effort he/she would put in if the target was 50 dollars. It is possible that the hawker may not make the 200 dollars in the first 4 hours but they would be close, because they would not allow self-imposed blocks such as * I would not hawk in certain areas, perhaps because there is someone they are trying to avoid in that area*. The moment you allow roadblocks, they limit your potential or capacity to achieve the goal.

I have an interesting story of someone close to me. It had been a huge dream to work in a particular Organization, but everyone told her it is impossible. It was easier many years ago but now, it is not. Oh she can never pass the entrance examination. Even if she pass, they will tell her she failed perhaps because of her skin colour. Few of those that said to her it is impossible never fails to remind her that the road is blocked, so she should stop wasting her time. But she persisted because she has a goal.

She added something interesting to her lists of TO-DO in her pursuit of achieving the goal.

She will walk sometimes in the morning and sometimes in the evening and passed the various branches of the Organization, praying and saying to God now am going to work, or oh I have finished for the day, if she takes her walk in the evening. Some might feel she is crazy but she simply conceived her dream and in time, she gave birth to it.

Now, she is working in that Organization to the glory of God. This is what it means to dream big. It sets you on high, you go all the way. You put in extra effort. She could have stopped applying for jobs in the Organization but for 8 years, she kept believing, trusting that this is possible unless those that are there are not human beings. What I also found fascinating is that she did not stop getting busy, but that did not stop her from going after her dream and achieving her goal.

And this in its entirety, reminded me of the word of God that His promises are not of evil, but, peace to give us an expected end. Now, mark the word expected. God expects us to have an expectation at the beginning of every journey. Having a dream to achieve a goal is an expectation, but what makes the expectation come to reality is the amount of effort you put into it.

People will give you reasons why your dream will fail, so, I encourage you to refuse to give up, envision a future where the dream cannot fail,  and you will stand to benefit the following:

  • You become more Focus
  • Decisive
  • You build resilience, and the benefits will help you grow by developing powerful habits such as taking responsibilities for your decisions and actions and improving through Change, and finally
  • Your Dream comes through.

Dreams are extremely important, and you can’t do it unless you imagine it – George Lucas
